This book celebrates the many styles of station building on the London Underground. None of the original station buildings from 1863 remains, but there are nevertheless some survivors from the time of the opening of the District Railway in 1868, such as Gloucester Road and Bayswater. The tremendous variation in styles over the period since then is attributable not only to the passage of time but also to the different ideas and needs of the independent companies that originally comprised the Underground.
Photographer Stephen Durnin spent over a year travelling around the Underground to compile this album as a record of station design on the system as it approached its 150th anniversary.
